- How to Survive Band Camp-

• Eat a good breakfast (some carbs, some protein) before coming to summer band.  We will be doing the majority of our physical exertion prior to the lunch break so it’s important for you to fuel your body prior to coming.

• Bring a large thermos of water and/or your camel pack.  If you don’t have a camel pak, you can find them at sporting goods stores. They’re great to have so that you have water with you at all times.

• Wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in and exercise comfortably in. (Comment from band students: white or light-colored shirts! Those shirts that "wick off" the moisture are also good. Do NOT try to look "pretty" - you WILL fail.)

• Wear tennis shoes with socks!  Nothing derails your marching progress like blisters, so be sure to wear socks with those tennis shoes.

• Bring a hat and sunglasses. (Comment from band student: Also, a recommended hairstyle is "off your neck.")

• Slather on the sunscreen prior to coming to band, and be sure to reapply.  As you know, the Texas sun can be quite intense.  Give you skin a chance to soak in the sunscreen.  Don’t just put it on right before you head outdoors to practice.

• Come to practice each day with an attitude of wanting to do your best in music and marching each and every moment.  We don’t expect you to be perfect right out of the chute, but we do expect you to give your best effort.

Remember, we’ll be practicing as many hours in one day of summer band, as we will practice in an entire week once school starts (8-hours).  This is where we all get to know one another so well, and work hard for a common goal.  You will be able to accomplish things you never thought possible, so go for it!!  We’re excited you’re with us – each person is vital to this organization – you are the ones who make our culture what it is.  We look forward to working with you all this summer.
